LECTURES

WEEK 1 - LEARNING & ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES

In week 1 lecture class,  Mr. Fauzi explained what is Digital Photography and Imaging and what we will learn in the module. We were also briefed on where the class material and important announcements will be posted. Mr. Fauzi also told us why it's important to well-organize your file. Next, we were told to set up an e-portfolio by using Blogspot. This e-portfolio is not only used to record all the work that has been done in this course but it is also used to submit all the tasks and assignments.

After That, Mr. Fauzi takes us to go through the first lecture slides, which is Introduction to Digital Photography & Imaging.

1. Why need to learn Photoshop
2. The importance of photoshop for the Graphic Designer
3. Photograph Manipulation
4. Digital Imaging
5. Top 10 Tips for Successful Graphic Designer

WEEK 2 - INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITION

Introduction to basic composition.

1. FOCAL POINT | A key element to any good composition is a strong focal point, as it helps your viewers’ eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first.

2. SCALE & HIERARCHY | Scale is often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements, thus signifying their importance to the communication.

3. BALANCE THE ELEMENTS | A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it. Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects, and heavily textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly colored elements.

4. WHITE SPACE | White space is mostly known as “empty space” to balance up the main focus of a composition. White space when used strategically can help boost your design’s clarity and overall look by balancing out the more complicated and busy parts of your composition with space that helps your design to breathe.

Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds is the process of dividing an imageinto thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This imaginary grid yields nine parts with four intersection points.

The Rule of Thirds is a way to:

  1. Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye.
  2. Creatively use negative space.
  3. Create conversation between the subject and background.
_
Golden Ratio

The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio. It is commonly found in nature, and when used in a design,it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

WEEK 3 - INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP 2
Introduce the most tool that will use in Digital imaging

| Lasso Tool, Pen Tool & Layering.

| Selection, Layering

| Tool Box

Photoshop provides several tool sets in the Toolbox, and you can expand the tool sets to reveal additional tools.

| Marquee Selection Tools Select and Mask

| Lasso Tool

How to Use the Lasso Tool

The Lasso Tool allow you to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document. If you like drawing with pencil and paper or cutting and pasting objects from a photo, then you will love the Lasso Tool.

When you click on the Lasso Tool from the Toolbar, you will see three different tool options: Lasso , Polygonal Lasso , Magnetic Lasso.

The Lasso Tool is great to use with a graphic tablet because it is similar to a pencil. Unlike a mouse or trackpad, a graphic tablet can give a better flow when drawing and making selections.

| Pen Tool

How to Use the Pen Tool

When it comes to actually creating a path from scratch, the pen tool is the most common option.

The pen tool is the way that you add these points and the way you drag the tool as you create the points determines how they will look.

Variation of Pen Tool

1. Straight line paths
4. Complex S curves
3. Simple S curves
2. U shaped curves

| Layering Tool

How to use Layer in Photoshop

Layers are different images stacked on top of each other. You can use each layer without affecting another one to make adjustments. Together they form one final image.

The advantage of using Layers is that you can save a Photoshop file with all the layers included. This means you can use layers for non-destructive editing. Your adjustments in Photoshop will never destroy the original image and contain all the extra information and/ or images you want to add to the original file.

WEEK 4 - INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP 3
| Adjustment Layer & Filters

What is Adjustment Layer? add color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels.

With the adjustment layers, you can edit and discard your adjustments or restore your original image at any time. This will make your workflow in Photoshop more flexible and efficient, and is an absolute must-know.

Basic understanding of Adjustment Layer

When you add an adjustment layer to your image, a new layer will appear over your image and a properties panel specific to the type of adjustment you’ve selected will pop up. The Properties panel will allow you to modify your adjustment layer, which in turn will modify your image.

1. BRIGHTNESS / CONTRAST | makes adjustments to the tonal range of your image.

2. LEVELS | modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtones, and highlights.

3. CURVES | Can adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image, and is the most powerful and precise tool for editing the tones in an image

4. EXPOSURE | to adjust the highlights of the image, Offset adjusts the mid tones and Gamma will adjust the dark tones only

5. SELECTIVE COLOUR | It canselectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors in your image.

What is Filter? | There are filters to change colour, add blur or create completely new image effects. Photoshop offers a virtually unlimited variety of filters for this purpose.

INSTRUCTION:

The Concept

The module introduces digital visual and imaging manipulation as a tool to express students’ vision and creative reinterpretation of the world through digital visual imagery.

This module equips students with conceptual, practical, and critical skills and knowledge of digital imagery, and to use Photoshop to produce digitally generated and manipulated images. Students will develop their knowledge of and skills in digital imaging and manipulation through a series of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises.

They will undergo practical assessments in the form of projects and exercises throughout the semester. Students will then render and submit a culminated final project and/or a body of work (portfolio) to demonstrate their ability to solve communication problems using the appropriate software and hardware as a form of the final assessment.

PRACTICAL:

WEEK 1 | PRACTICAL

1.Bezier Game - Here is my Bezier Game result👅

 2. List of my 3 favorite graphic design work from Pinterest.

DESIGN #1

This is a digital painting from a project named, Motel Art by Mariam ElReweny. I choose this illustration is because the drawing and painting look real and the combination of warm tones goes well together.

DESIGN #2

This is a transformation of Evian Water's advertising poster into Cielo Water by Hans Vergara. I like the details that are added to the poster, especially in the water part. The water flowing out of the lake shows how clear the water is. In the second half, it became a cold south/north with penguins, icebergs, mint, and more. Its shows that the water will be cool and fresh. Overall the poster looks very fresh and outstanding. All elements and the graphic inside are in the correct position and contain the meaning inside.

DESIGN #3

This is an advertisement for a brand named, 汤巨倍健 from China and is mainly advertises their protein powder. The design showed the product was created in a laboratory. I think it is a creative way to express scientific nutrition. The colours used look clean and are look futuristic.

COMPOSITION #3

As an excercise, I also used the image that given by Mr Martin to create another 3 composition of the collage art.
#1

I had practice the rules of third for this collage art.

 #2

For this collage, I applied golden ratio in this collage.

 #3

I using golden ratio to create this collage art. My ideation of this collage is refer to a collage art series named newseries#2 by Felipe Guga.

WEEK 4 | PROJECT 1B - Adjustment Layer

After received the feedback from Mr Fauzi, I am choosing composition #3 to do the next step which is adjustment layer. I am using Adobe Illustration to do my editing, because I havent received Adobe account from school and I only have Adobe illustrator.
  • Contrast (which I can use level in PS) - to increase the contrast of the image.
  • Hue/Saturation (which I can use hue/saturated in PS) - made the color more darker
  • colour tone (which I can use for add filter in PS) - adding warm colour
After Editing, the colour of my collage look more hue-saturated compared to the original. And the structure is more clear and stands out.
