LECTURES

WEEK 9 / TYPE CONSTRUCTION (SHAPE)

F.g.1.1 Type construction

First, do the research and sketch out all the possibility and choose one. Choose the typeface that closest with the design from the 10 typeface that given. Next, looking on their detail and structure how the letter form is constructed, identify their structure.

Note while doing font design :
  • Artboard : 1000pt x 1000pt
  • Make sure the X-height is 500pt
  • Create the x-height, ascender line, descender line and base line by using guideline
F.g.1.2 x-height, ascender and descender line

WEEK 10 / FONT LAB DEMO

  • Create a new file in Fontlab, then, File - New - Font Info, to set the font and family names, family and font dimensions.
  • Open preference (cmd +,) select ignore stroke and colour, import original and keep the original position.
F.g.1.3 Preference
  • Place the x and y coordinate in illustrator, then copy it.
F.g.1.4 Place the x and y coordinate
    • Double click on the glyphs and paste the letter that copy from Illustrator.
    • Edit the sidebearings and kerning of each letter.
    • Export the fonts in TrueTypeFont file.

TASK 3A : TYPE DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION

For Task 3A, we were tasked to design a typeface with a limited number of alphabets, which is - a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , .  .  We were asked to start with some rough sketches, after that begin to digitalize the sketch by using Adobe Illustrator. Create a typefaces with good typeface characteristics; subtlety, character, presence, legibility and readability.

    Here are my sketch :
    F.g.2.1 Sketch #1  22.5.2022
    F.g.2.2 Sketch #2 22.5.2022
    F.g.2.3 Sketch #3 22.5.2022

My favourite is sketch #2 and #3. After receiving feedback from
Mr Vinod, I decided to choose the second one (#2). Because of using hand drawn so my sketch is not that perfect. So I decided to import my sketch and adjust it perfectly.

    F.g2.4 tracing my sketch 30.5.2022

Then I create a rectangle to make sure the size of the letter is inside and balanced.

Then I pull out the guideline to create the x-height, ascender line, descender line and base line.

Next, I will proceed with my Fontlab. I pasted all my letter and punctuation inside the Fontlab. Before that have to fill up all the correct value in font info.

After all the kerning are done, it's ready to export the font to TTF file. I named my font as AESTHETIC..

After installed the font, I start to do my poster.

After I submitted all my task, I just received the feedback from Mr. Vinod that I have to change my font size and make it all in the same size.

    Final Submission :
    • Download link for generated font -
    • Illustrator all letters on baseline export: 300dpi; JPG; Grayscale (max width 2048 pixels)
    • Poster export: A4; Grayscale; JPG; 300dpi
    • Credit line : name of font; by who and year, 8pt Univers Regular
    • Poster Save as: A4; PDF

    FEEDBACK

    WEEK 9 / Task 3A :

    | General feedback : It is interesting.

    | Specific feedback :
    1. #1 : has potential, but need some finesse. The P should under the line.
    2. #2 : Is interesting point, could work.
    3. #3 : Is interesting, but S & Y is different angle. Prefer vertical one, might have to change the angle of the S.
    WEEK 10 / Task 3A :

    | General feedback : It a good typeface and excellent work.

    | Specific feedback :
    1. The comma have to be longer.

    REFLECTION

    | Experiences

It was a new experience for me and its very difficult. I learned how to create my own font and download it and use it, it was so interesting !  I had spend so much time to figure out my Fontlab. I think Task 3A was the most challenging in all the task that given before. From sketching, digitalize the typeface to export the font to TTF file. Its great to learned something new 💫

    | Observation

In this task we just have to design with a limited number of letters. For me, it is quite hard. I observe that using font is easy, but it tangled when thinking which font to use. Font-making is more complex than I think. I have to practice more and figure out more about Fontlab.

    | Findings

I think a nice font affects all design and it may be the key to effect on the design. And I found that a minor different can straight effect the feeling of the font, especially the consistency between the letter. Therefore, when designing fonts, we have to pay attention on many things into detail. For example, the angle, line, width, etc. of each point.

    FURTHER STUDY

Fg3.1 Just my type by Simon Garfield

Learning Summary : From this book, I know that today no simpler everyday artistic freedom than the pull-down font menu. Before that, the echo of Johann Gutenberg with every key tap. Here are names we recognize: Helvetica, Times New Roman, Palatino and Gill Sans. Here are the names from folios and flaking manuscripts: Bembo, Baskerville and Caslon. Computers have rendered us all good typefaces, a privilege we could never have anticipated in the age of the typewriter. Typefaces are now 560 years old and there are more than 100,000 fonts in the world. One of the classic type which is Garamond, named after the type designer Claude Garamond, active in Paris in the first half of the sixteenth century, whose highly legible Roman type blew away the heavy fustiness of his German predecessors, and later, adapted by William Caslon in England, would provide the letters for the American Declaration of Independence.
