TASK 3B : TYPE DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION

Task 3B is to express typographically a social message or greeting that is relevant to the campus community at Taylor’s University or society. We were going to design a telegram sticker with the knowledge and experience that we gained in the previous task and apply it. We are asked to only use Taylor's red, black and white to create the stickers. We wear allowed to use minor graphical elements or visuals to add in our design.

We were asked to choose one tittle and start with some rough sketches after that begin to digitalize the sketch by using Adobe Illustrator. Here is my sketch.

F.g.1.1 Sketch #1  7.6.2022
F.g.1.2 Sketch #2  7.6.2022
F.g.1.3 Sketch #3  7.6.2022

I don't have many ideas pop out so I decided to create 3 different titles instead of one. After receiving feedback from Mr. Vinod, I decided to choose the first one which is Valentine's day. And I have to adjust my word to fix it into a square.

First, I imported my sketch and trace it.

Then, I start to create some graphic elements such as love and star. I also create a cupid arrow interspersed in the "valentine" word.

F.g.1.6 creating love shape 10.6.2022
F.g.1.7 creating star shape 10.6.2022

F.g.1.8 creating cupid arrow 10.6.2022

F.g.1.10 distorting Taylors logo to fix inside the V 10.6.2022

F.g.1.11 my first outcome in colour 13.6.2022
F.g.1.12 my first outcome in black and white 13.6.2022

After receiving Mr. Vinod's feedback, I need to add some elements to let the letter look more pop up. I decided to add some effect to the letter and add some highlights to the element.

After received feedback, I know that overall my sticker look a little bit over white. So, I added a pink shade on it and fill up the space inside with pink. I had done 2 different compositions of pink outlines to compare which one is better.

Next, I upload my sticker to telegram and try to send it

FEEDBACK

WEEK 11 / Task 3B :

| General feedback : Select one tittle and work on different sketch. Try to avoid drawing as much as possible

| Specific feedback : The 1st one is good, but unfortunately it is not a square. Not fit within a square.

WEEK 12 / Task 3B :

| General feedback : Good job, is getting there.

| Specific feedback :

Work more inside. It can be some rotundity to it like add some flat grey let the word bubble-up a little bit. Explore more until it reach a point where you think you've reached the best.

WEEK 13 / Task 3B :

| General feedback : This is good, can see the dimension in the letterform. Is good work.

| Specific feedback :
  1. The sticker is a little bit over white, may try to add a pink shade so that it contrast the white that already there.
  2. delete all the space inside.

REFLECTION

| Experiences

I had created my very first stickers for Telegram! For Task 3B, I utilised the knowledge and skills gained and learned from the previous task. This task is fun and is more easier than all the previous task. At the beginning, I have no idea what should I design and where should I start. So I keep doing research and I created 3 different tittle of sketch. During the process of digitalise, it is quite challenging for me to find a perfect curve or shape of the word and it take a long time to adjust them. Finally, after a few tries, I managed to achieve result that I want.👏

| Observation

For task 3B, we created a digital sticker there might be use to converse with others. I noticed that brainstorming ideas was not as easy as I thought. We were allowed to use only red, black and white are quite limiting. After that, I found out that we are allowed to use the shades of the limited colour. I tried to utilise the colour shades like pink/grey to create highlight and shadow. It make my stickers look more pop up!

| Findings

In this task, it did not have many rules or guidelines that we have to follow compare with previous task, however, when it comes to brainstorming the idea, thinking about the lettering and some graphical element, it was difficult. It is because a minor different can straight effect the overall outcome of the stickers such as the which colour shade to use, where should the highlight suppose to be and etc. After getting feedback, it helped me to find out the missing part and understand where should I made the changes to get a better result.

FURTHER STUDY

Fg2.1 MASTERING HAND LETTERING by Mye De Leon

Fg2.2 one page of the book

Learning Summary : From this book, I realized that the fundamentals of handwriting have to go through terminology, anatomy, etc. And I have learned different lettering styles such as Traditional calligraphy, Gothic lettering, Modern calligraphy, Serif and Sans serif lettering and others. It have to go through every single letter of the alphabet both uppercase and lowercase letters. I also learned about composition and hierarchy, colors, the whole lettering process, perspective, and shadows. Most importantly, an effectively organizing content within a design so that it’s easy to understand and consume is one of a designer’s most important jobs.
