INSTRUCTION

TASK 2 (A): KEY ARTWORK

Task 2A is to design a wordmark using letters. This wordmark is used to identify ourselves and can also be used as a wordmark on lapel pins/t-shirts/posters (collateral). For this, we can use the initials of our name, first name, or pet's name. Investigate and create as many permutations and combinations of these initials as possible. The final key art piece must be an elegant solution, not a convoluted or confusing one, resulting in a useful and easily communicated key art piece.

At first, I didn't have too many ideas to pop up, I only created 2 ideas, with an upper case and a small case. Here are some of my experimental sketch.

fg. 1.1 my experimental sketch on paper 2.10.2022

Import the sketch to AI and do an image trace.

I combined all the traced shapes into 1 shape by using a shape builder tool. Then simplify the path.

Separate the shape by using the knife tool then combine the A and S together.

After receiving feedback, I decided to discover more, I came out with 4 ideas, here is my outcome.

I tried to play with colour.

fg. 1.11 my outcome with color 6.10.2022

For the first one, I created A and S with bubble elements, while the E was inspired by party ribbons so it looked more playful. For the second one, I used A to create the hair, which represents me as a girl. The S and E fonts are designed with water-drop characters. Third, I designed S as a river, placed in the middle, and A and E filled the space of S. The fourth is a combination of A and S with a star in the middle for my name which is "shiner"

After receiving feedback, I decided to choose the 3rd one.

REFLECTION

| Experiences

It takes a lot of brainstorming to create a mark/logo to represent me, and I initially misunderstood Mr. Vinod's meaning. It was difficult to animate the key artwork using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop since I had to consider how it would move. I also wanted to have a significant amount of variation while ensuring that they had a nice and seamless movement.

| Observation

Creating a brand name or key artwork allows me to not only learn about typography but also about logo design and branding. I was previously interested in branding design, so this is a very exciting opportunity for me. Difficult to build a layout that matches my branding style despite the many designs available

| Findings

The logo must be very eye-catching and stand out from the crowd. There are a few things to consider when representing yourself. I was able to better understand the structure of social media pages and learn how to create my own posts with the help of sites like Pinterest and Behance, or other Instagram accounts.

FURTHER STUDY

Advanced Typography By Richard hunt

The majority of the book is devoted to typography as an efficient visual communication tool. There is, however, a section near the end that encourages innovative and experimental approaches to typography. This means that even designers who can't stop themselves from breaking every rule in type design will be able to discover more complex rules to break. I learned a wealth of knowledge in history, society, and psychology, as well as practical tactics for mastering the art and skill of typography. The book's content and graphics are rich and instructive, with photos drawn from a variety of historical artefacts and modern media. Annotations, quotations from industrial designers, comprehensive explanations, and reminders strewn throughout the margins lend dimension to each subject.
