TASK 3: TYPE EXPLORATION AND APPLICATION
For Task 3 we are required to design and develop all 26 alphabets, numbers which are 0 to 9, and include some punctuations. From the brief, we have 3 option to choose which is :
- Create a font that is designed to answer a wider problem or to be part of a solution in your field of interest, whether it be graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design, or any other related area (not necessarily reflecting your specialty). The end result is a fully created typeface (.ttf) plus apps.
- Investigate the use of a typeface in your field of interest, comprehend its current connection, find areas for improvement, and consider possible solutions or combinations that may add value to the present typeface. The end product is a fully created typeface (.ttf) plus apps.
- Experiment. To be considered an experiment, your idea must be fresh and unique, such as working with material that is 3-dimensional, digitally augmented, edible, odd, typographic music video, or fine art. The student defines the end product. Therefore, researching your chosen area is a must, as examining how type is utilized in the field, and discovering potential weaknesses or places for additional exploration or testing. You can then try to come up with a novel solution or add value to existing use. The end product could be a designed font and its application in the form or format for which it is intended to give a solution, a designed font that adds value to an existing use, or an exploratory output that yields something fresh and distinctive. The work can take any form connected to the topic being solved, researched, or experimented with, such as animation, 3D, print, ambient, projection, movie or game title, music video, usage of diverse materials, and so on.
I decided to choose the option 3, Here is my proposal slide :
Idea Proposal in PDF
I decided to choose idea 1, I found that the "a " that I created in Task 2 is similar like the "a" from the packaging , so I going to take the idea from it.
fg1.1 some reference
First, I find out the characteristic that has used from the letterform and finding how I write every alphabet.
fg1.2 sketch
fg1.3 finding characteristic of the letterform
fg1.4 the characteristic of the letterform
fg1.5 the characteristic of the letterform
Since my previous "a" letter is small letter, I decided to create small letter first. All the shape that I used is from the shape that I had cut out. ( labeled with colour) After finishing all the structure, I using shape builder tool to combine all the shapes and using smooth tool to smooth the edge and at the same time I use simplify tool to simplify the anchor point. Knife tool to cut out the extra shape.

fg1.12 creating "@"
fg1.13 creating "2"
fg1.14 Finding consistency for capital letter

fg1.15 Creating "E,F"
fg1.16 creating "U"

fg1.18 Finalising the letters

Copy and paste all the alphabet into Fontlab.
fg2.2 adjusting
| Application.
After finalising, I proceed to application. My idea is utilise my final typeface in any design or merchandise that appears elegant or minimalist. I decided to create 1 clothes brand visual and 5 applications that can utilize & showcase the fonts. (Example of use)

FEEDBACK
WEEK 10 / Task 3:
| General feedback: N/A (Absent)
WEEK 11 / Task 3:
| General feedback: The consistency could be improved
| Specific feedback: The thickness should be the same, especially the X is a bit weird
WEEK 12 / Task 3:
| General feedback: Is far behind. Have to work on your Application faster
| Specific feedback: Is smooth, remember to keep the progress of the work.
WEEK 13 / Task 3:
| General feedback: N/A (No class)

REFLECTION
| Experiences
This task is like a revision of the previous semester in that it allows us to learn and experiment with typeface design more. We designed a complete typeface with upper and lower case letters, numbers, and punctuation. It was interesting, but it was also rather difficult. To be honest, I did not follow the appropriate procedure when developing the font. My work's direction is a little haphazard; I basically do whatever comes to mind. There are many font designs that are used in our daily lives, but most of the time my mind remained blank and I just kept exploring. And because of this, I spent a lot of time on it.
| Observation
In this part, I think the most important thing when doing font design is Consistent Characteristics. A well-designed font will have characteristics that are consistent throughout the font set. This means that the letter widths should be consistent in order to avoid some letters being overly wide and others being too thin and it is also applied to the height of the letters. And it takes a long time to complete each letter; if I make a tiny change in one, I may have to re-adjust another, but I believe this will help me get more experience and pay more attention to detail in each design.
| Findings
According to my research, a clear typeface may be used in a variety of ways and is more communicative. This task allows me to gain a better understanding of the relationship between font design and strokes. And having a sense of design to create anything could really help you because you won't get lost along the process while working on to meet a better result.

FURTHER STUDY
Designing Type by Karen Cheng
From Designing Type, I learned the history of type, the primary systems of typeface classification, and the effects of new technology on design methodology, among many other things. It is a comprehensive type design reference for typographers. It also includes a more in-depth discussion of the procedures behind developing typefaces, such as the basic issues that must be considered, such as visual principles and letter structure, optical compensation and readability, and the relationships between letters and forms in a font. This can analyse a wide range of classic and modern typefaces, including those from several prime type foundries.
